It’s that time of year again! The one where you rearrange the tissues in the wastebasket to cover the mini Snickers bar wrappers so no one discovers you’ve secretly been eating your kid’s Halloween chocolate in the bathroom! Yeah? No? Just me? That’s cool. There are worse things to be ashamed of these days, I mean it is 2022 after all, the bar has been set preeeeetty high.
So, a very belated Happy Halloween to you all! Before we know it, we’ll be elbowing our way through the maskless crowds, dodging the latest Covid variant while looking for Christmas bargains, then prepping for the big New Year’s Eve celebration. Or as I like to call it, “2023: And You Thought 2022 Was Bad!”
Speaking of things going down the toilet, are we all emotionally prepared for the US midterm elections today? One small election for man, one giant leap back to the the 1950’s for Womankind?
Yeah. Me neither. So I made a brownie pie this past weekend with mini Halloween Mars bars in it (my second in under a week, no judging) and went outdoors and lit shit on fire (like the Dems should have done, but ANYWAY) and covered it in roasted marshmallows and ate it straight out of the pan. I got some fresh air, caught the last of the fall roses hanging on, saw some November seals poking their heads through the water. My kid was running around with his best friend and I wondered if I should have made them pay more attention to how I lit the fire. You know, to brush up on the survival skills they’ll surely need in the dystopian future barrelling towards them. But I let them play instead.
I felt better at the end of the day, even when the sun disappeared at 4:36 pm.
Halloween Brownie Pie
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup (113g) butter, melted and slightly cooled
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup cocoa (dark Dutch processed is best)
1/4 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup or so of your favourite leftover Halloween chocolate, chopped into small chunks (I used Mars bars, and they melted into a chewy, salty, caramelly dream)
Heat over to 350°. Lightly grease an 8-inch pie plate. In a medium bowl, beat eggs and sugar together until smooth and creamy, then whisk in melted butter. Add flour, cocoa and salt, mix well. Stir in vanilla, and then half the chocolate chunks. Pour into pie plate and smooth the batter until evenly spread. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate on top. Bake 25-30 minutes or until almost set. The pie won’t test done in centre, so be careful not to over bake.
Perfect with homemade vanilla ice cream. Or reheated next to a fire with marshmallows on top. Or eaten out of the pan with your fingers, standing at the kitchen counter after everyone else has gone to bed.
